The massive Central Texas fertilizer plant explosion last April 17, 2013, is considered one of America’s worst industrial accidents in years. However, what triggered the occurrence of the said fertilizer plant explosion is still unknown.

Effects of The Fertilizer Plant Explosion in Texas

The blast shook the town around 8 pm Wednesday. A total of 15 people were killed, at least 160 people were injured, and many houses and business establishments were destroyed due to the fiery explosion. Many people were rushed to the Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center and Providence Health Center in Waco due to the explosion. Most patients have serious injuries, including head trauma and orthopedic problems, and some have cuts, minor burns, and breathing problems. Among the dead were four emergency service workers and five volunteer firefighters.

The effect of the fertilizer plant explosion was devastating. A four-block area around the center of the blast was destroyed. Around 75 homes were damaged, including an apartment complex with 50 units. The explosion knocked out power and was audible miles away from the blast. The U.S. Geographical Services has even recorded a magnitude 2.1 from the outbreak, comparable to a minor earthquake.

Investigators have identified the exact spot where the explosion occurred; however, investigation continues to determine the cause. Local officials are working hand in hand with federal law enforcement organizations, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, in investigating the root cause of the blast.

The spokeswoman for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Franceska Perot, said that investigators were still combing through the explosion’s debris. She said residents should not return to their homes until they’re finished. However, she could not give a definite timetable in which this task would be completed.
