It has been shown that drivers aged 18-34 are the age group most likely involved in motor vehicle accidents. Studies show that 43.71% of the drivers of this age group were not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the cities heavily populated are those that experience the most accidents.

  • In 2016, there was 436,748 total number of car accidents in Texas cities and towns.
  • There was 72,100 total number of car accident fatalities and injuries in urban areas.
  • 76.29% of accidents occurred in urban areas.
  • 410 motorcyclists were killed in 2019 and 45% were not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
  • 256,338 people were injured in motor vehicle collisions in 2019.
  • There were 12,897 severe crashes resulting in serious injury in 2019. 15,843 of these people sustained a serious injury.

The Top 5 Cities of Texas With The Most Accidents

  • Houston had 12.8% of total collisions in the state; 15.39% of these total crashes occurred in towns and cities.
  • San Antonio had 8.37% of total crashes; 10.57% of the crashes happened in towns and cities.
  • Dallas had 6.42% of total crashes; 8.11% of the total crashes occurred in towns and cities.
  • El Paso had 3.11% of total collisions; 3.93% of these crashes happened in towns and cities.
  • Fort Worth had 2.98% total crashes; 3.76% of these collisions occurred in towns and cities.

The leading factor of urban-related crashes are:

  • Not driving on a single lane
  • Speeding
  • Driving to closely
  • Failure to yield
  • Distracted or inattention driving

Houston is by far the most dangerous city for driving in Texas.

Houston has the highest reported accidents in Texas at a rate of 67,241.

There were 245 fatalities and 1,304 incapacitating injury collisions than any other city in the state of Texas.

Dallas is by far the largest speeding related fatalities in Texas.

  • 97 total number of people were killed in speeding crashes.
  • Dallas County has the highest number of work zone collision deaths in the state.

San Antonio had:

  • 46.175 total crashes
  • 189 fatalities
  • 923 incapacitating injuries

Dallas had:

  • 35,433 total collisions
  • 192 fatalities
  • 1,137 incapacitating injuries

El Paso had:

  • 17,172 total crashes
  • 65 deaths
  • 233 incapacitating injuries

Fort Worth had:

  • 16,442 total collisions
  • 84 deaths
  • 659 incapacitating injuries

Austin had:

  • 80 deaths
  • 529 injuries

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, 377 people were killed in distracted related driving in 2019.

Bexar County, the county of San Antonio reported the most distracted driving accidents at 26,305. Distracted driving was also reported in Harris County (Houston), Tarrant County (Fort Worth), Dallas County, and Travis County (Austin).

DUI Crashes

While Houston is by far the city with the highest number of crashes, San Antonio has the highest number of DUI crashes than any other city in the state. Houston was the second-highest number of DUI crashes followed by Austin, Dallas, and El Paso.

  • 886 people were killed in 2019 in motor vehicle crashes where the driver was under the influence of alcohol.
  • In 2019 more DUI crashes were reported between 2:00 am and 2:59 am than any other hour of the day. Most of these collisions occurred on Saturday.
  • 987 people were killed in drunk driving accidents.
  • 26% of those people were killed in motor vehicle crashes.
