In an urgent food safety alert, millions of pounds of ready-to-eat chicken and turkey products have been recalled across the United States due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced that the products, produced by BrucePac, were sold nationwide at major retailers including Aldi, Trader Joe’s, HEB, Walmart, and more.

Details of the Recall

The recalled poultry products were produced between June 19, 2024, and October 8, 2024, and have been distributed to stores, restaurants, and other institutions across the country. The FSIS first alerted consumers to the recall on October 9, 2024, and subsequently updated the list of affected products on October 10 and October 11 to include additional items.

Key Retailers Involved:

Affected Brand Names:

  • Jenny Craig
  • Atkins
  • Signature Select
  • Boston Market
  • Amazon Fresh
  • Michelina’s
  • Rao’s
  • Dole

The recall encompasses over 200 different ready-to-eat poultry products, totaling approximately 10 million pounds of meat. Many of these are ready-made salads, rice, or pasta bowls that include potentially contaminated chicken or turkey.

Source of Contamination

The potential contamination was discovered during routine FSIS testing, which identified the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat poultry products from BrucePac. Further testing traced the source of the bacteria back to BrucePac’s ready-to-eat chicken products.

Identifying Recalled Products

Some of the recalled items may display the establishment number 51205 or P-51205 inside or under the USDA mark of inspection. However, due to further distribution and processing by other companies, some products might bear different establishment numbers.

About Listeria

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause listeriosis, a serious infection typically caused by eating contaminated food. While the infection may be mild for healthy individuals, it can be severe and even fatal for certain high-risk groups.

High-Risk Groups:

  • Pregnant women and newborns
  • Adults aged 65 and older
  • Individuals with weakened immune systems

Symptoms of Listeria Infection

Gastrointestinal Symptoms:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

Invasive Infection Symptoms (Beyond the Gut):

  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • Seizures

Pregnant Individuals:

  • Fever
  • Flu-like symptoms (fatigue and muscle aches)
  • Miscarriage, premature delivery, or stillbirth in severe cases

Symptoms of intestinal infection typically begin within 24 hours of consuming contaminated food and are usually mild, lasting just a few days. Invasive infections may develop later and can be life-threatening.

If you experience any of these symptoms after consuming recalled products, seek medical attention immediately.

If you or a loved one has been affected by this recall and have experienced health issues due to Listeria contamination, you may be entitled to compensation.
